Part of the Smithsonian, this site features interactive exhibits of Asian art and over 1000 images on line from their collections of  Chinese, Japanese, Korean, South Asian and Himalayan, and Southeast Asian art. Also features curriculum materials for teachers on Hindu and Buddhist art

 An excellent online exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts with links for Chinese and Japanese art as well as the Tibetan Mandala listed below!  This site is an excellent resource.

French site which has an English version and virtual tours of both its permanent collection and temporary exhibits.  It also has games and puzzles and a downloadable screensaver with pictures from Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Himalayan Art

Extensive collection of images of Himalayan art from private and public collections around the world.  Created by the Himalayan Art Project, which is funded by The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation.  The picture comes from their site which has interesting sounds too!

Explore the world of Kabuki theatre through the woodblock prints of Kunisada, one of the most prolific printmakers in Japan's history.

 

 

 

Chinese Propaganda Posters

A good site from Stefan Landsberger, a lecturer in contemporary Chinese history at Leiden University and an avid collector. This is an extensive collection of propaganda posters with brief explanations and good contextualizations. Nice images from the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution all the way to newer posters on SARS and Falun Gong. He has a very interesting section on “Iron Women and Foxy Ladies”. Highly recommended.

 

 

 

Sand Mandala by the Venerable Losang Samten, Philadelphia Museum of Art
Tibetan Buddhist master Losang Samten made this sand mandala between July 6-16, 1999 in the Indian Temple in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. On July 16 the mandala was swept up and the sand was poured into the Schuylkill River.  This site has video and explanation of the creation of the mandala

This one was created in 1991 and is on permanent exhibition. There is good video and teacher’s guide material

 

 

Bhutan, Mountain Fortress of the Gods
A continuation of an exhibition which ran for nearly three years in Vienna, Zaragoza and Leiden, this extraordinary web site explores the history, religion, culture and art of the Kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayas. Video clips, photographs, virtual tours and well-written texts. Choose High or low tech versions of the site which is in German or English.
