YOUR SCHOLARSHIPS, LOANS, AND GRANTS

Austin College students may use the financial assistance they already have to help pay for an overseas study program’s fees. See the AC Financial Aid Office for details related to your own situation. You may also wish to investigate federal and state sources you have not used before.

AUSTIN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year, in the spring, Austin College awards scholarships, based on merit and need, to those going abroad in the next academic year: fall, spring, or year.

The Myron Low Fund for International Study (Low Scholarship) is an endowed scholarship for Austin College students studying abroad. Preference is given to students with a greater degree of financial need, as well as to students pursuing studies in a foreign language. Visit the AC International Education Office for an application.

The Charles F. Richardson III International Studies Scholarship Program (Richardson Scholarship) is an endowed scholarship for Austin College students studying abroad. Students must attend AC full-time and have a minimum 3.0 GPA to apply. Financial need is taken into consideration. Visit the International Education Office for an application.

See the International Education Office for application instructions.

ESPECIALLY FOR ASIA

Freeman-Asia awards provide financial assistance for students studying in any of 15 different countries/regions of Asia. Scholarships are given for both need and merit. AC students usually win these awards. Electronic applications are available online at http://www.iie.org/pgms/Freeman-ASIA.  Also see this page created by Freeman Asia recipients.

The Bridging Scholarship for study in Japan provides $2,500 to students on semester-long programs, and $4,000 to students on academic-year programs. All undergraduates interested in Japan are eligible to apply: students need not have studied the Japanese language nor be Japanese majors. For details, see http://www.colorado.edu/ealld/atj, or visit the IE Office for a brochure.

OTHERS LIKELY TO SUPPORT STUDY IN ASIA

National Security Education Program (NSEP) Scholarships are substantial research grants designed to encourage Americans to study the languages and cultures of non-traditional study abroad destinations. Undergraduates interested in applying for NSEP's David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship must apply in January for the coming academic year. Visit http://www.aed.org/nsep for information, or visit the AC Office of International Education.

The Gilman Scholarship is need-based funding for Pell Grant recipients studying abroad. The maximum award is $5,000. To apply, visit www.iie.org/gilman, call 1-888-887-5939 ext. 25, or stop by the IE Office.

Bowman Travel Grants provide funding for undergraduates seeking to study abroad in non-traditional countries. Awards vary depending on destination and seasonal airfares. For further information, visit http://www.ciee.org/study/scholarships/bowman.htm, call 1-800-40-STUDY, or visit the IE Office.

Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for students who serve as "ambassadors of goodwill" in countries where Rotary Clubs exist. Students may receive as much as $12,000 for participating in a three-month cultural immersion program, and as much as $25,000 for one academic year. Foreign language study is emphasized. Goodwill ambassadors are expected to deliver presentations on their homelands during their stay, and upon return to the United States they discuss their experience abroad with their local Rotary Club and other organizations. Students interested in applying begin by consulting their hometown chapter of Rotary International; Austin College students may apply through Sherman's district 5810 as well. Visit http://www.rotary.org/index.html, or contact your local Rotary Club for further information.

PROGRAM AND HOST UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Most of our programs offer merit and need based awards.  Check to see if your host university does, especially in the case of non-approved programs.
