Nostálgica - Janet Salazar

The first time I went back home after moving to college, I cried upon my return. Before coming to college, people always told me it would become my "new home away from home." I was excited for all the fun opportunities I always heard about college. But, little did I know how lonely it could be, how different it would be. It just didn't feel like home, because it wasn't like home. It didn't have my friends, my family, the food, the colored walls with the colorful paintings hanging on them, the talavera on the table, the statutes of la Virgencita, or the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús candles, nor glamour shots or family photos hanging on the walls. It didn't have taqueria stands or fruterías on every corner, 0.99¢ Jarritos in every store, a paletero on every street, or even caldo de pollo served on the hottest nights of the year. I became homesick-nostálgica. I didn't realize how much I would miss all of the aspects of home, until I didn't have it anymore. But when it was missing, there was a huge part of me missing. I had to find ways to bring that part of me to my "new home away from home." A big part of that process was finding "La Familia," which is an organization for Latin American students at Austin College. They bring the Latin American culture to Austin College and bring together the most important parts of people. They gave me a community, they helped me bring home to Sherman, and now they are mi famila. I have grown to appreciate home, my culture and heritage even more now. This exhibit is, not only a tribute to my culture, but also a way to bring my home, my culture, to Sherman. It is representative to me by showing how I had to make Sherman my new home, and allows me to reflect on my memories made here as ! leave this place when I graduate. This exhibit is also meant to celebrate the common experience that Latinos had growing up and to remind the Latin American students here of their homes. It is meant to bring comfort to those who are experiencing these same feelings and emotions while being away from home. Esté exposición es para las personas que sienten nostálgico.
