Joseph Aken ’04 International Montessori Schools of Brussels, Belgium / All subjects with 6 to 12-year-olds, grades 1 through 6 Reclining Nude Graphite on Dura-Lar Here I explore the feel of graphite upon slightly translucent mylar. The smooth and forgiving surface responds to the pressure of the graphite generating a line that is sensorially gratifying and visually distinct. I am a visual artist who works in both 2D and 3D, often using graphite, charcoal, pastel and mixed media to explore the nude human body. |

David Keating ’01 Leadership Public School, Hayward, CA / Art 1,2,3, Yearbook, 3 O'clock News Self-Portrait Plaster, wire, paint This piece represents me and my current state of creativity and life. Concrete is man-made and strong. Jails and prisons are meant to hold people away from functioning society. Currently I teach at a school that is struggling to stay afloat post covid, I have separated from my wife but still live in the same house to raise our two kids, and I have just stopped finding time to make art. I live in mind jail, but creativity wants to come out. The bars and jail can only hold me so long. |

David Keating ’01 Leadership Public School, Hayward, CA / Art 1,2,3, Yearbook, 3 O'clock News You Can or You Can't 2x4 wood and cans This piece represents the paths we walk throughout life and how we chose to walk those paths. Some of us will walk across the bridge and not crush a single can. While others, especially as the night goes on, will crush the cans as we walk. Some of us might even try to crush the cans on purpose, while others might try to delicately walk to make it across safely. I encourage you to let the cans represent whatever you want as you walk. For me, the cans represent how much I enjoy drinking beer while at the same time understanding the dangers that come with alcohol, constantly reevaluating the amount I am drinking and how it is affecting me and the people around me. |
