Artist Statement For as long as I can remember I have been taking extreme close-ups of flowers. I love the variety, and often times the unexpected, centers that flowers have. I want to try and capture it for other people to see as well. I want to give people a reason to stop and contemplate the more hidden beauty that flowers hold. Thus, when I got the opportunity to do a large painting project, I quickly decided that I wanted to portray the smaller details that are at the center of flowers on a much larger scale. After hearing from my classmate's surprise and interest in response, I became determined to create a series of such paintings to share with others the view I see, which then developed into my senior show. All of the photos I used for reference when doing my close-up paintings were taken by me. While not the reason I chose these photos, or even why I took them in the first place, I found that they did all end up having a unique story: * The hibiscus in the large, heavy pot that has to be dragged inside each winter. * A bloom from the mountain rose bush that my dad had given me for my birthday one year. * The purple iris that came from my grandmother's garden after she passed. * A poppy that I had taken when scouting places for my high school senior photos. * The small purple vincas that bloom along the ground in the shade along the fence in my backyard. * A dandelion bloom from next to the Caruth dorm, at the corner nearest the WCC, taken my freshman year at the Austin College campus. This project has even granted me a renewed appreciation for these fine details, the amount of layering and hours spent on getting each flower up to the necessary level of detail helped me to notice some of the more obscure aspects they hold, such as the small changes in color and texture, that I had not noticed originally. |
