Techniques to rend meaning from fabric, yarn, or thread such as knitting, crochet, weaving, sewing, and lace making are often thought of as 'crafts'. In our society there is a different value placed upon what we consider crafts and what we consider art. Art is serious, it is intentional, it is meant to give meaning. Crafts are lighthearted and done at home, they generally have an intended function past display. The difference between the two is which activities are traditionally done by men versus women. The perception of fiber art mirrors my experience as a woman in physics. When I meet new men in an academic context, I must prove my worth as a physicist much like how the worth of a crocheted piece must be proven to be art, not assumed to be. The pieces here are made with fiber arts such as crochet, shuttle tatting, and sewing as well as traditional techniques like painting. They reflect my experience of falling in love with physics and finding my place in it. |
