Sappho's Fragment 94 (Stanza 9)

My practice examines and reappropriates Christian artforms in order to explore what is now left to express through this genre of painting. It seeks to extend the Western canon and represent communities who were too often forced to stay out of the public eye. This gallery contains a number of pieces I have painted since I started teaching in August. I was raised in a conservative Catholic household and grew up seeing art in churches long before I could visit museums. However, my subjective experience later shaped my understanding of the world and forced me to recognize the absence of people like me in Christian representations meant to be universal. Born out of love for art history, my work adapts academic norms and elements borrowed from the work of European artists to try and give visibility to marginalized experiences. It uses its medium as a tool to bridge the gap between artistic traditions and contemporary socio-political issues. It questions how religious art can be reconfigured to widen our understanding of the world remind us these experiences have always existed and always will.
