Art 252: Sculpture You Have Got to Get a Good Head on Your Shoulders For this unit we discussed, Artist Wayne White, The Kitsch Movement, Surrealism, and Pop Art. Students were asked to make a portrait, caricature of a person or character out of cardboard. We talked about using conventionally accessible materials to create a sculpture. Additive sculpture processes, and facial mapping. Students learned how to manipulate a simple material like cardboard to create a drawing in 3D, students were also asked to consider how to convey personality through facial structures. As well as learning structural construction techniques, to build a sturdy construct that could be worn and hold weight.

Art 113: Art Fundamentals Cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse) These collaborative drawings were created through a game of chance and imagination in which each participant contributed in sequence, folding the page to conceal their mark before passing it on. First popularized by the Surrealist artists of the 1920s, this process encouraged unexpected connections and playful invention. The students in Art Fundamentals—many of whom are new to studio practice—worked together to explore this method. As an introduction to both making and thinking about art, the exercise emphasized collaboration, surprise, and the creative possibilities that arise when individual contributions merge into a collective whole.

Photography 236 Light as Decision Photography begins with light—measured, gathered, and ultimately recorded. In this project, students explored the interplay of camera mechanics and how decisions about light, function and framing shape not only the clarity of an image but also its atmosphere. Exposure became more than a technical exercise; it was their first act of interpretation. Each frame reflects a moment of decision—where to stand, what to include, how to respond to shifting light. Guided by the elements and principles of design, these photographs balance precision with discovery, showing how even the simplest scene can be transformed by the light that touches it.
