Week #11 and Week #12

 

Objective

For the last weeks of class we will dedicate most of class time to talking about sculpture and issues related to sculptural work. Each student will complete a proposal for a sculptural work and then we will work in groups to realize a final project .

 

 

 

Slide lecture over the history of sculpture. We will discuss the history of sculptural materials, motifs, the difference between 2-D and 3-D work, and the historic and contemporary relevancy of sculpture. Class discussion on what some of those issues are and how individual students chose to represent them will follow slides.

Assignment: Work on scale model or maquette, of sculpture. Pay particular attention to issues of balance, negative space, proportion and repetition of form. Models to be built out of mat board and hinged or taped together. Students should work with the idea that finished sculpture will occupy real space and will be constructed out of two 8x10 sheets of plywood.

 

 

 

 

Discussion of maquettes and strengths and weaknesses of each students work. (critique) Divide into work groups for discussion of final resolutions to sculpture problem. Tour of sculpture facility and lecture on tool use and safety.
