Week #8

Objective

This week we will be reviewing our semester so far and working toward coalescing all of the information learned into our production of art.  We will be moving from group projects and exercises toward individualized assignments meant to encourage the development of each student’s own personal vision and artistic style.  Further discussion of 20th Century art, and the revolution of color theory that resulted from the contemporary artists search for a new voice early in this century, will be a major goal of this weeks classes.  (Deja vu.) We will begin our library research into individual artists whose careers had a major impact on contemporary art of their day.  Each student will select an artist that was of seminal importance to early 20th century art and begin research on that artist.  Class will visit the Abell Library and I will be available to assist any student with their research.

In class we will view the DVD, “The Mechanical Paradise,” from the series and book, Shock of the New, written and narrated by Robert Hughes. The series is on reserve in the Abell library by request or available in print.  For review read volume 1/2-The Mechanical Paradise.  In class worksheet response guide will facilitate our viewing. Then we will all go to the Abell library and look through the stacks for an artists’ monograph that we will use for a reference when we paint our next painting.  Reference the list of artists provided in class.  Each student will be assigned an artist from the early 20th Century to research

Assignment
Choose an artist from the early 20th Century that you will research and copy their painting style.  Answer questions on the review and reflection sheet handed out in class. Check out a book and bring the book to class on Thursday

Working from images of paintings by the early 20thC artist that you have selected, each student will begin to paint one small section of a painting representing the “palette” of the artist.  Working with just one chosen and abstracted portion of the painting, we will look closely at the colors and painting style of the artist and work to replicate both.  Students should take a piece of paper and mask the entire page from their book with a small window cut out to reveal the selected portion to paint.

Assignment
In your sketch-pad paint a portion of a painting from your artist. Your work may be smaller than the entire page, 11”x14” would be an ideal size.  This small section should be finished as homework.
