HWC 44 Attendance Quiz Policy

1. There will be about 12 quizzes during the Spring Term.

2. The one question on the quiz will be taken from the presentation given on the day of the quiz.

3. Each quiz will count the same as one answer on an exam. At the end of the course, the cumulative total of quiz points will be added to a student's total number of points from the scheduled exams. For example, there are usually 50 questions/exam and four exams provide 200 correct answers for the course. If there were a total of 12 quizzes in HWC 44, and a student were present to answer correctly all twelve, that would provide a 5.7% increase in one's grade.

4. Upon missing 5 of these attendance quizzes due to unexcused absences, a student will be dropped from HWC 44.

5. There is a limit of 3 excused absences on quiz days.

6. It is the responsibility of each student to know when an attendance quiz was given.

The policy for missed quizzes is similar to our policy for missing an exam. If you know beforehand that you are going to miss a class because of some scheduled Austin College event (i.e., Model UN, athletic activity), simply inform Dr. Gibson about the impending event. Your absence will be "excused" and you can "make up" any missed quiz. The "make up" process must be completed by the second HWC 44 class day after your return to campus.

If your reason for missing a quiz falls into the "sudden and unanticipated calamity" category as described on page xi of the HWC 44 syllabus, follow the written directions for requesting a "make up" quiz. Within 48 hours make your request via e-mail to hgibson@austinc.edu. Permission to "make up" the quiz is at the discretion of the HWC 44 staff. After you have been granted permission to "make up" a missed quiz, you have until the second HWC class day to complete the process. Dr. Gibson will make that date clear to you upon granting permission.

A "make up" quiz in HWC 44 involves your checking out and listening to the audio tape of the missed presentation, available in Abell Library. Then you are to e-mail Dr. Gibson (hgibson@austinc.edu) notifying him that you have listened to the tape. Finally, speak to Dr. Gibson personally, at which time he will ask you a very simple question about the presentation. Upon answering the question, you will be awarded the one point and your absence will be excused.
