BIOLOGY 62: HISTOLOGY
Spring 2003 Class meetings: Lecture 11:00 -11:50PM MWF in MS 301 and Lab1:30 - 4:20 PM on Wednesday in MS 303
TEXTBOOK: Junqueira, Carneiro, and Kelley, Basic Histology,
9th edition
Kerr, Atlas of Functional Histology
GOALS FOR THE COURSE: At the completion of this course, you
will
be able to
1. describe the four major tissue types: epithelium,
connective,
muscle, and nervous
2. recognize these specific tissue types
3. identify specific cells within a given tissue
4. describe protein products specific cells make
5. integrate tissue types into organ systems such as
circulatory,
integument, lymphoid, digestive, respiratory, and urinary
EXAMS: Lecture exams are a combination of short answer and essay and are scheduled on March 2, April 13, and a take-home (May 5). Lab exams will be ‘practicals’ and will be given on March 3, April 14, and May 12. I assume that each of you will take the exams on the scheduled dates. If there are problems, you must talk with me ahead of time.
GRADING: Lecture exams will be worth 60% of the your grade and lab exams will constitute 40% of your grade. To assign grades, I use the following scheme: A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 60-69, F= < 59. In addition, I use a (+) and (-) system of grading. If you are taking the course S/U: A grade of S requires all work to be at 73% or higher. A grade of U will be assigned if any work is below 73%.
CLASS ATTENDANCE: Your attendance in class and lab is very important. You know the value of attending lectures and labs. I do not follow the text and use extensive outside readings in the preparation of my lectures. Any classes missed, you are responsible for the material. If you miss 2 lectures, you will be warned and if the third lecture is missed, you will be dropped from the course failing.
You should attend labs. Time spent in lab is invaluable. Working on the slides the first time by yourself is, in my estimation, a miserable experience. If you miss a lab, you will be warned and the second lab missed, you will be dropped from the course failing.
LABS: You will have your own slide box. You will be issued a key to a drawer in MS 303 and you should keep the slides locked up when you are not using them. The slides will be returned prior to each lab exam. You are responsible for the return of all slides in good condition. The key will be returned prior to the last lab practical. Microscopes must remain in MS 303.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: I encourage you to work with each other in the lab and studying the lecture material. Also, I encourage you to ask questions until you get a grip on the material. But, when it comes to lecture and lab exams, I expect each person in this class to do her/his own work. You must take the exams on the stated day at the stated time. If there is a problem with this, call me (X2363) ahead of time and we will discuss the situation.
OTHER ODDS AND ENDS: Additionally, slides and microscopes are to REMAIN in MS 303; they are not to be removed. MS 303 will be open from about 9 am on a daily basis. You should keep the room clean and trash picked up; if the room is "trashed," the privilege of the open lab will be withdrawn.
For your safety at night and on the weekends, study with at least one other individual. There is a phone in the hallway of each floor of Moody Science -- know where each is located. Also, there is a fire extinguisher in the lab -- make certain you know where it is.
We are sharing the lab with Dr. Goldsmith’s Eukaryotic Pathogens
class.
They meet on Wednesday at 1:30 PM. So, lab is closed for us
during that time. You will be informed of the lab exams in that
class
so you will know which days and times to avoid using the lab.
