Current Research

With the cost of oil and other non-renewable forms of energy increasing, alternative forms of energy become more viable. My area of research investigates the syntheses and properties of new inorganic dyes in a type of photovoltaic (solar) cell called a Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC).  Description: Description: X:\Pictures\DSC Picture.png

 

A DSSC promises to be more economical than current technology because it uses an efficient and inexpensive dye-sensitized semiconducting material to convert light to electricity. The dye, which absorbs visible light, is attached to a nano-crystalline semiconductor.  Upon absorption of light, an electron from the dye enters the semiconducting material in a higher energy state and cycles through the cell to return to the dye in a lower energy state (i.e. it generates a potential which is subsequently used to perform work).

The inorganic dyes I am researching utilize platinum(II) metal centers with nitrogen- and sulfur-containing ligands. 

 

 

Academic History

I grew up in Okemos, MI under the shadow of Michigan State University, where my father is a professor in crop and soil science.  As a high school student, I frequently aided my dad in the laboratory performing routine sampling and analysis work.  After graduating in 1993 from high school, I enrolled in Wheaton College where I majored in chemistry.  I utilized my summer breaks at Wheaton College to continue research in the fields of material science, animal science, and chemistry at Michigan State.

After graduating from Wheaton College in 1997 with a B.S. in chemistry, I continued my education in chemistry in the graduate program at Michigan State University.  In 1999, my research in coordination complexes incorporating redox-active ligands moved to Texas A&M University where my advisor, Dr. Kim Dunbar, took a new position in the department of chemistry.  I earned my Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry in 2002.

I next accepted a NSF-RSEC postdoctoral fellowship at Wichita State University where I taught general and inorganic chemistry classes and laboratory and conducted research with Dr. David Eichhorn, modeling an enzyme called nitrile hydratase.

In the fall of 2004, I returned to Texas as the resident inorganic professor at Austin College. The summer prior to my current academic position, I was a visiting professor with Dr. Mohammad Omary at the University of North Texas to develop collaborative research. During my sabbatical in 2018 my family and I traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica where I conducted research with Drs. Leslie Pineda Cedaño and Cristian Campos Fernández at CELEQ (Centro de Investigación en Electroquímica y Energía Quimíca) within the Universidad de Costa Rica. At Austin College I continuously expand my knowledge of inorganic chemistry by engaging students through teaching and by directing students in research.
