Harry H. Gibson Jr.

Chair, Chemistry Department
Organic Chemistry

B.A., Emory University, 1961
Ph.D., Florida State University, 1967
Visiting Scholar, Regent College 197879
Visiting Professor, Clemson University, 1985-86

Background and Teaching:

Professor Gibson joined the faculty at Austin College in 1967 and regularly teaches Organic Chemistry (Chemistry 35 and 36), Advanced Organic Chemistry (Chemistry 72) and various January Term courses such as Spectroscopic Methods in Organic Chemistry and Computer-Assisted Chemistry.

Research:

Thanks to the support of The Welch Foundation and Austin College, almost every summer at Austin College has been spent in full-time research with Austin College students. Dr. Gibson's research interests are in the general area of mechanistic organic chemistry with a focus on reactive intermediates. He and his students have developed various methods of generating heterocyclic nitrenium ions. Recently, work has focused on the photolytic decomposition of various pyridinium compounds to generate the 1,2,4-triazolyl cation. Such work has included systhesis, GC/MS analysis of reaction mixtures, and the use of NMR analysis in following the rate and progress of the reactions.
Interests:
Dr. Gibson is an excellent table tennis player, enjoys golf with his colleague Dr. Imhoff, and finds the study of the relationship between science and Christianity very stimulating.

"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings."
