The Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry at Austin College is composed of six full-time faculty, a laboratory manager and an instrument manager shared with other science departments.  The faculty have studied, been trained and worked at numerous highly-regarded institutions of higher education of wide geographic distribution from the West to the Northeast United States as well as Canada and Israel.  Faculty expertise is in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.

The courses offered prepare students for immediate employment in chemistry, for further education in graduate school, for health science careers and other technical careers.  The chemistry program is certified by the American Chemical Society and is rated as one of the strongest departments on campus in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2007.  It is equipped with numerous instruments essential to teaching and research and looks forward to a future home in a new thirty-five million dollar Science Building for which detailed plans have been made and major contributions found.  The department graduates ten to fifteen majors a year in Chemistry or Biochemistry.  The Biochemistry program in particular has grown in strength and number of majors in recent years.

The chemistry faculty have always viewed themselves as professional chemists who teach as evidenced by their vigorous research programs supported by external and internal grants.  They also teach in a variety of courses outside their core areas of expertise: Natural Science Courses for the non-science student, a freshman seminar program, Integrated Science Courses examining broader philosophical and societal aspects of  science and finally January Term courses which offer exciting opportunities for travel and/or expression of other interests in medicinal chemistry, art and chemistry, archeology and chemistry, energy and chemistry, history/philosophy of chemistry.
