The Chemistry Department
offers
degrees in both chemistry and biochemistry. The College operates on a
4-1-4 academic calendar, including 14-week Fall and Spring terms and a
4-week January Term. The usual teaching load during the long semester
is two lecture and two lab sections, or 12 contact hours per week.
Faculty are expected to develop a research program suitable for
undergraduate participation and the College offers funding for
start-up. In addition Chemistry has a departmental Welch research
grant to fund equipment and stipends for a summer research program and
an endowed fund to support activities that enrich the chemistry
program. The Department has been the recipient of two NSF equipment
grants and a building renovation grant, leading in part to a 300 MHz
FT-NMR and renovation of a research laboratory. In addition to the
NMR, a wide range of instrumentation is also available. Besides
candidates with strong credentials in chemistry, the College seeks
faculty with broad academic interests, an enthusiasm for working with
students and a willingness to participate in the various activities of
the Department including grant writing.
