Research has always been an important activity in the chemistry department for students and faculty alike.  Students recognize the unique opportunities research gives for a very different, personalized way of learning from close contact with experienced researchers.

Chemistry faculty pride themselves on being teachers who continue to be active researchers.  Current research projects include:

  • Materials science and medicinal chemistry - Andy Carr

  • FT-IR spectroscopy to investigate bisurea organogelators - Karla McCain

  • Synthesis of light-harvesting platinum compounds for use in solar cells - Brad Smucker

  • Immune-based Therapeutical Approaches to Prostate Cancer and Autoimmune (Type 1) Diabetes - Jozef Borvak

  • Mechanistic organic chemistry with a focus on reactive intermediates - Hank Gibson

  • Bioprospecting for novel antibacterials from plants - Venugopal Mukku
