WELCOME! [[exclamdown]]BIENVENIDOS!
I. OBJECTIVES AND ORGANIZATION.
This course combines dance instruction, music appreciation, and cultural history. It will acquaint you with several styles of Mexican, Cuban, and Argentinian popular music and dance. The course is comprised of three components:
A. Dance instruction.
1. Rumba, chachachá, merengue, tango, mambo, salsa, lambada.
Three days per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1:30pm to 2:30pm in the Sid Richardson gym you will receive an hour of professional ballroom dance instruction from Nancie Phelps.
2. Danza azteca, polka, Jaliscan folk dance.
Two days per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30pm to 2:30pm in the Sid Richardson gym, you will receive an hour of professional folkloric dance instruction from the choreographer of the Anita N. Martínez Ballet Folklórico, Ómar Ángeles.
B. History of Latin American Music and Dance.
A wide variety of readings and videotapes will provide a historical context that will enable students to understand the development and extraordinary diversity of Mexican, Cuban, and Argentinian music and dance.
C. Music and Dance in Latin American Literature
Students will read translations of a Latin American novel that has been heavily influenced by music and dance. All students will read Puig's Heartbreak Tango .
II. ATTENDANCE.
Since this course is quite intensive, it is especially important that students attend class everyday. Accordingly, I will deduct a full percentage point from your total grade for each absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.
However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

Tue., Jan. 17 Exam I (Indigenous music and dance, corridos, With His Pistol in His Hand)
Tue., Jan. 24 Exam II (Heartbreak Tango, Mexican popular music and dance, etc.)
Thu., Feb. 2 Examen III (Comprehensive, but with emphasis on salsa)
Students who choose to write the term paper may take any TWO of the above THREE exams.
B. QUIZZES.
There will be a quiz at the beginning of almost every class. They will be brief tests of your knowledge of the readings and the material discussed in the dance and history classes. I will always give you an idea of what will be on the following day's quiz. There will be no make-up quizzes. Two or three quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.
C. LISTENING ASSIGNMENTS
There will be seven listening assignments. Students will listen to four audio cassettes at home or at the Media center and answer the questions for each assignment. See course outline.
C. TERM PAPER.
The paper may concern any aspect of Latin American music and/or dance that interests you. If you choose to do the paper, you must make an appointment with me so that I may guide you in your research. The term paper is due on Wed., Feb. 1st.
D. ORAL PRESENTATION.
Each student will sign up for one five-minute presentation. The presentation must concern the readings assigned for the previous night's homework. Since the class will be divided into three groups, you will make your presentation only to the members of your own group. The members of your group will be responsible for grading 50% of your presentation according to the following scale: 45-50--A; 40-44--B; 35-39--C; 30-34--D; 29 and below--F.
