Spanish 26--Spanish Language House

Fall 1998

INSTRUCTORS: Dolores Saucedo VM3042

Patrick Duffey, AD 309, tel. 2364

MEETINGS: Wed., 9pm

GOAL: The goal of Spanish House is to simulate a Spanish language immersion experience in which you can learn to better understand and speak Spanish. The more you are exposed to everyday spoken Spanish, the more you will be able to understand and speak. Thus speaking Spanish is mandatory in the public areas of the House: the hallways and the meeting room. Make an effort to speak Spanish in your rooms as well.

I. Wednesday meetings and small group pláticas.

Each week there will be one 1-hour Wed. meeting and one small group pláticas.

At the 9pm Wed. meeting, pairs of students and Dolores will organize activities, or we will watch a movie, go on a field trip or have some other activity.

The pláticas are a chance for groups of eight of you to converse with Dolores for at least 30 minutes in her room. On Mondays at 9pm one group will visit her, on Tuesdays the other.

Attendance will be graded as follows. Medical and other legitimate excuses will be evaluated by Dolores on a case by case basis.

  • 100------------no misses
  • 95------------one miss
  • 90---------------two misses
  • 85---------------three
  • 79---------------four
  • 69---------------five
  • 59---------------six

II. Spanish Table.

Spanish Table meets Monday through Friday, 11:45am-1PM. You must attend two times a week.

III. Wednesday presentation.

All residents will prepare a presentation with a partner during the semester. Presentations should last 10 minutes. This can be any activity or game that allows all present at the meeting to speak or hear Spanish. Here are some ideas:

A parody of a movie or TV show

A game (e.g., Chisme, 20 Preguntas, Simón Dice, etc.)

An arts and craft we can all make (e.g., piñatas, papel picado, etc.)

A song

A dance

A report on some aspect of Hispanic culture

A scavenger hunt in Spanish.

A cooking demonstration (doesn't have to be Hispanic food, but must be in Spanish.)

If you need ideas, ask Dolores or Patrick. Presentations will be graded on interest and on how they encourage all students to use their Spanish.

IV. LA MARGARITA.

All students will write 1-2 articles for our house publication, which will be published every other Friday. The first edition will come out on Sept. 18 (articles due Tue., Sept 14).They will also edit La Margarita once. The list will be posted.

PROCEDURE FOR WRITERS:

1. Write article. Save on diskette. Print one copy.

2. Turn in to EDITOR at the Wednesday meeting.

PROCEDURE FOR EDITORS:

1. On Mon. and Tue., remind writers to work on articles.

2. At Wed. meeting, collect 3 articles.

3. Assemble articles on two pages.

4. Have Dolores proofread both pages.

5. Turn in to Patrick by 11AM on Friday.

V. Willingness to speak Spanish.

You'll have to make an effort to speak Spanish--the more you already know the easier it will be. For those with little previous Spanish the required effort will be greater. But the more you listen and the more you speak the easier it will get. In order to speak Spanish you must spend time in the house and participating in Spanish events. You'll have to speak to Dolores often so that she can get to know you, help you learn, and determine if you are progressing.
