WELCOME! ¡BIENVENIDOS!

I. OBJECTIVES.

In Sp 102, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language. Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in Spanish will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

II. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is especially important in language classes. Accordingly, I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over FOUR (4). Three tardies equal one absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.

However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

A. TWO MAJOR EXAMS (25%).

Please mark the following dates on your calendar. Only under extenuating circumstances will a student be granted permission to make up an exam. There will be TWO major exams, according to the following schedule:

Fri., Sept. 22, 2006.   Examen I (Capítulos 13 y 14)

Mon., Oct. 16, 2006.  Examen II (Capítulos 15 y 16)

B. CUMULATIVE EXAM (15%).

There will also be a cumulative exam covering Chapters 7-12 on Wed., Nov. 15, 2006.

C. WRITING COMPONENT. (5%).

All students will complete three compositions during the semester. Each composition will be a movie review of at least 400 words (approximately 2 pages in length).

D. WORLD WIDE WEB TASKS. (20%).

Each student will complete five Web projects. The instructions for the first four projects is located at this web address: http://artemis.austincollege.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/course/sp102_7-12.html  These projects correspond to the themes of Chapters 7-12 (vacations, holidays, shopping, and health). The projects are due according to the dates listed in the course outline. Each project is worth 3% of your final grade.

The fifth Web project is a virtual journey. You and another student will take a trip to two or three Hispanic countries via the World Wide Web. You will prepare an oral presentation and a diary of your travels complete with pictures and conversations, using PowerPoint®.  For complete instructions see  http://artemis.austincollege.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/course/sp102viajeimag.html.

This final Web project is worth 8% of your final grade.

E. WORKBOOK (10%.

You will be responsible for completing the workbook assignments as indicated in the course outline. Regarding the workbook, if the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

F. QUIZZES and lecturas (5%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes. We will have about 10 brief quizzes throughout the semester. I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

The lecturas will consist of three readings which students will analyze outside of class.  Students' grades will be based on short quizzes.

H. ORAL COMPONENT (20%).

The oral component will consist of three  presentaciones.   Presentaciones are two minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class. Each student will sign up to do 3 presentaciones, about one every three weeks. Points will be awarded according to the following system:

Presentaciones (21 possible points)

7 pts.----good presentation

4 pt.----acceptable presentation

1 pt.-----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 20% of your total grade, and there are 21  possible points.

IV. Practicing your Spanish: the Puntos website, pen pals, and on-line activities.

The point of this class is to teach you as much Spanish as possible. If you want to learn more, and possibly earn some extra credit, here are some possibilities:

1.  According to the Puntos website:  "This Online Learning Center is designed to enhance your learning. Book-specific content like quizzing, cultural activities with Web links, audio, and video can all be accessed by choosing from the list.... These materials are designed to help you succeed in your course."  Here is the address:  http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072873949/student_view0/index.html

2. Get a Spanish-language pen pal via the internet. Go to

Intercambio Cultural Español Inglés http://www.lingolex.com/ceengf.htm

or

http://www.LanguageTrade.com/ LanguageTrade™ Using this site, it is possible to speak to people in Hispanic countries via Yahoo Instant Messenger and your computer's microphone.

3. Do other on-line activities.  For example, you can practice grammatical structures on the web:
