WELCOME! [[exclamdown]]BIENVENIDOS!

I. OBJECTIVES.

In Sp 11, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language. Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in Spanish will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

II. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is especially important in language classes. Accordingly, I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over FOUR (4). Three tardies equal one absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.

However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

III. GRADING.

The breakdown is as follows:

Exams (10% each)--------------------- 50%

Oral component------------------------ 20%

Writing assignments (2% each)------- 10%

Reading assignments (1% each)------- 5%

Workbook (4%), lab (3%), Destinos

quizzes and workbook (4%), all other

quizzes (4%)---------------------------- 15%

(Late homework will not receive full credit.)

A. EXAMS (50%).

Please mark the following dates on your calendar. Only under extenuating circumstances will a student be granted permission to make up an exam. There will be FIVE major exams, according to the following schedule:

Tue., Feb. 20 Examen I (Ante todo, 1 & 2)

Wed., Mar. 6 Examen II (Chapters 3 & 4)

Mon., April 1st Examen III (5 & 6)

Wed., April 16 Examen IV (7 & 8)

Thu., May 16, 12:00-2:00pm Final Exam (Comprehensive, but emphasis on 9 & 10)

B. ORAL COMPONENT.

The oral component will consist of three parts: five presentaciones, two entrevistas, and participation in the skit at the end of the semester. Presentaciones are one minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class. The two entrevistas are personal interviews with me. They will be approximately five minutes in duration.

Each student will sign up to do 5 presentaciones, about one every two weeks. Points will be awarded according to the following system:

Presentaciones (20 possible points)

4 pts.----good presentation

2 pt.----acceptable presentation

1 pt.-----less than acceptable

Entrevistas (10 possible points--5 pts each)

5 pts. ----good interview

3 pts ----acceptable

2 pt. -----less than acceptable

Skit (10 possible points)

10 pts. ----good skit

8 pts. acceptable

5 pts. ----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 20% of your total grade, and there are 40 possible points.

C. WRITING ASSIGNMENTS (10%).

There will be five brief writing assignments as indicated in the course outline below. Some parts will be written in class, others at home.

D. READING ASSIGNMENTS (5%).

There will be five short readings on the days indicated in the course outline. Grades for this portion of the course will be based on the completion of exercises or the results of brief quizzes.

E. WORKBOOK (4%) AND LAB (3%).

You will be responsible for completing the workbook and lab book assignments as indicated in the course outline. Regarding the workbook, if the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

F. DESTINOS VIDEO (4%).

Beginning in the third week of classes, you will view two episodes of Destinos, a video program which teaches you authentic Spanish by getting you interested in the twisting plot of a "telenovela," a soap opera. In Sp 11, you will view the first seventeen episodes of the telenovela. You will continue with Destinos in Sp 12 and Sp 23.

You will be required to view 2 episodes per week, as indicated in the course outline below. You will also be required to turn in to me the exercises in your Viewer's Handbook for the episodes seen that week. We will have weekly quizzes (on Fridays) to make sure you have seen the episodes. We will see Episode 1 in class, and a few other episodes in class thereafter, to be announced. You may view the episodes not seen in class in the Media Center, Abell Library.

G. QUIZZES (4%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes. We will have about 15 brief quizzes throughout the semester. I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

IV. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

The College's Standards of Academic Integrity are assumed to apply to your work for this course.
