WELCOME! ¡BIENVENIDOS!

I. OBJECTIVES.

In Sp 12, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language. Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in Spanish will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

II. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is especially important in language classes. Accordingly, I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over FOUR (4). Three tardies equal one absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.

However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

III. GRADING.

(Late homework will not receive full credit.)

A. TWO MAJOR EXAMS (20%).

Please mark the following dates on your calendar. Only under extenuating circumstances will a student be granted permission to make up an exam. There will be TWO major exams, according to the following schedule:

Thu., Feb. 26 Examen I (Capítulos 7 y 8)

Tue., Mar. 31 Examen II (Capítulos 9 y 10)

B. ONE CUMULATIVE EXAM (20%).

There will also be a cumulative exam covering Chapters 7-12 on Tuesday, April 21.

C. WRITING COMPONENT. 6%.

All students will complete two compositions during the semester. Each composition will be a movie review of at least 250 words (approximately 1 and 1/2 pages in length).

D. WORLD WIDE WEB IMAGINARY VOYAGE. 20%.

After the Thanksgiving break, each of you will make an imaginary voyage. You will "visit" places in Hispanic countries, becoming a virtual tourist "en el ciberespacio español." First, you will complete a preliminary "scavenger hunt" activity (worth 2%) in order to familiarize yourself with the Web. By accessing my homepage at http://artemis.austinc.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/PD.html, you will find a list of sites in Spanish entitled "Sp 12 Links." Using these resources, you will locate the information requested by this assignment. The final WWW assignment will be a 2-person group project worth 18% and will involve writing, reading, and a final oral presentation.

E. WORKBOOK (7%)

F. LAB (3%).

You will be responsible for completing the workbook and lab book assignments as indicated in the course outline. Regarding the workbook, if the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

G. DESTINOS VIDEO (4%).

Beginning in the third week of classes, you will view two episodes of Destinos, a video program which teaches you authentic Spanish by getting you interested in the twisting plot of a "telenovela," a soap opera. In Sp 12, you will view the episodes 17 through 34 of the teleAprela. Onthe first day of class you will receive a summary of the preceding episodes. You will continue with Destinos in Sp 23.

You will be required to view 1 or 2 episodes per week. We will have weekly quizzes (on Fridays) to make sure you have seen the episodes. You may view the episodes in the Media Center, Abell Library.

H. QUIZZES and lecturas(5%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes. We will have about 15 brief quizzes throughout the semester. I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

The lecturas will consist of three cultural readings which students will analyze and discuss in class. Students' grades will be based on participation in discussions and short quizzes.

I. ORAL COMPONENT. 15%.

The oral component will consist of two parts: five presentaciones, and oneentrevista. Presentaciones are two minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class. The entrevista is a personal interview with me. It will be approximately five minutes in duration.

Each student will sign up to do 5 presentaciones, about one every two weeks. Points will be awarded according to the following system:

Presentaciones (20 possible points)

4 pts.----good presentation

2 pt.----acceptable presentation

1 pt.-----less than acceptable

Entrevista (5 possible points)

5 pts. ----good interview

3 pts ----acceptable

2 pt. -----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 15% of your total grade, and there are 25 possible points.

IV. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

The College's Standards of Academic Integrity are assumed to apply to your work for this course.
