WELCOME! ¡BIENVENIDOS!

I. OBJECTIVES.

In Sp 23, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language. Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in Spanish will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

II. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is especially important in language classes. Accordingly, I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over FOUR (4). Three tardies equal one absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.

However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

Wed., Feb. 20 Examen I (Capítulos 13 y 14)

Wed., Mar. 20 Examen II (Capítulos 15 y 16)

B. CUMULATIVE EXAM (20%).

There will also be a cumulative exam covering Chapters 13-18 on Wed., Apr. 10TH.

C. WRITING COMPONENT. (6%).

All students will complete three compositions during the semester. Each composition will be a movie review of at least 400 words (approximately 2 pages in length).

D. WORLD WIDE WEB TASKS. (20%).

Each student will complete six WWW task as indicated in the Course Outline. Each task correponds thematically to a chapter in Puntos. Go to http://artemis.austinc.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/sp23new.html.

Cap 13. El arte y la cultura. (10%) Via the internet, students will tour Hispanic museums, listen to Hispanic music, and experience other aspects of this rich cultural heritage.

Cap. 14. El medio ambiente. (10%) Students will purchase a car via the internet and/or will explore websites having to do with Latin American environmental issues.

Cap. 15. La vida social. (10%) Students will use websites to plan a Hispanic fiesta, possibly a wedding or some other significant event.

Cap. 17. Las últimas novedades. (10%) Students will read and comment on an article in an on-line Spanish-language publication.

Cap. 18. En el extranjero. (50%)To be completed after April 11th, this cumulative project accounts for half of this portion of the student's grade. Students will make a weekend trip to a Hispanic country, utilizing Spanish-language websites.

In order to complete these assignments, students will access the websites provided on my webpage, http://artemis.austinc.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/PD.html . Guidelines for each assignment are provided at this website. See the Course Outline for due dates.

E. WORKBOOK (6%)

F. LAB (4%).

You will be responsible for completing the workbook and lab book assignments as indicated in the course outline. Regarding the workbook, if the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

G. QUIZZES and lecturas(4%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes. We will have about 15 brief quizzes throughout the semester. I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

The lecturas will consist of three readings which students will analyze outside of class. Students' grades will be based on short quizzes.

H. ORAL COMPONENT. 20%.

The oral component will consist of two parts: five presentaciones, and oneentrevista. Presentaciones are two minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class. The entrevista is a personal interview with me. It will be approximately five minutes in duration.

Each student will sign up to do 5 presentaciones, about one every two weeks. Points will be awarded according to the following system:

Presentaciones (20 possible points)

4 pts.----good presentation

2 pt.----acceptable presentation

1 pt.-----less than acceptable

Entrevista (5 possible points)

5 pts. ----good interview

3 pts ----acceptable

2 pt. -----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 20% of your total grade, and there are 25 possible points.
