I.
Description of the course.
Sp 24 is the fourth course in AC's
Spanish language program. This course focuses on communicative
skills. Class time will be devoted primarily to discussions of
readings, oral practice, listening comprehension practice, and
vocabulary acquisition. Students are expected to review grammar rules
and forms outside of class. Most of the grammar encountered in this
class will not be new to you. This is because the purpose of the
course is not to learn new rules and forms, but rather to learn to
apply the rules in communicative situations.
There are seven communicative goals for this course:
- describing and comparing in detail
- narrating in the present
- narrating in the past
- narrating in the future
- giving advice, expressing opinions and reacting to dramatic events and situations
- talking about likes and dislikes and explaining why
- hypothesizing about both personal and impersonal topics
In both oral and written work, you will learn to support your opinions clearly and convincingly. The course will be taught entirely in Spanish.
II. Attendance. Regular attendance is especially important in language classes. Accordingly, I will subtract one point from the final grade for each time that the student is absent more than twice. Students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment only if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

There will be two major exams, each covering two chapters. Please mark the following dates on your calendar: March 8th and April 12.
The final exam will be comprehensive and will be administered on Friday, May 12, 12-2pm.
Each student will write three compositions during the semester, two 500-word, and one 750-word. The topics of these compositions will be specified later.
Six times during the semester (as indicated in the course outline), students will utilize information in the "Rincón Cultural" sections of each chapter, along with information from the website http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/aven/main.htm , in order to write a 200-word description of an imaginary trip to that Hispanic region. Students must visit several of the websites listed at the site above, and must integrate the information from these sites and from the "Rincón" section in order to form a coherent, richly cultural imaginary trip.
Every Friday during the semester, small goups of students will meet with me for 10-minute conversations, during which they will discuss a short story from Cuentos americanos as well as a topic having to do with the chapter we're studying.
F. Vocabulary and other quizzes (5%)
Throughout the semester, I will give quizzes on both vocabulary and grammatical structures and forms.
You will be responsible for completing the workbook assignments as indicated in the course outline. If the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time. An answer key is provided at the back of the Manual so that students may check their own work. In addition, answers to the Práctica oral activities are given on tape. I expect you to check your own work, and then hand it in to me as indicated in the schedule below.
Students will complete the listening portions of the workbook with 4 audiotapes which they can purchase from the instructor for a nominal fee. A copy of the tapes is also available at the Circulation Desk of the Abell Library.
It is understood that all students are subject to the rules of conduct set forth in the Austin College academic integrity policy. It is also understood that the instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus as needed during the semester.
