I. Description of the course. Sp 202 is the fourth course in AC's Spanish language program. This course focuses on communicative skills. Class time will be devoted primarily to discussions of readings, oral practice, listening comprehension practice, and vocabulary acquisition. Students are expected to review grammar rules and forms outside of class. Most of the grammar encountered in this class will not be new to you. This is because the purpose of the course is not to learn new rules and forms, but rather to learn to apply the rules in communicative situations.

There are seven communicative goals for this course:

  • describing and comparing in detail
  • narrating in the present
  • narrating in the past
  • narrating in the future
  • giving advice, expressing opinions and reacting to dramatic events and situations
  • talking about likes and dislikes and explaining why
  • hypothesizing about both personal and impersonal topics

In both oral and written work, you will learn to support your opinions clearly and convincingly. The course will be taught entirely in Spanish.

II. Attendance. Regular attendance is especially important in language classes. Students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment only if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

A. Major exams (30%)

There will be two major exams, each covering two chapters.

B. Final exam (20%)

The final exam will be comprehensive.

C. Writing assignments (8%)

Each student will write two compositions during the semester, each one of 500 words. The topics of these compositions will be specified later.

D. Oral component (20%)

Every Friday during the semester, small groups of students will meet with me for 10-15 minute conversations, during which they will discuss a short story from  Lecturas literarias para acompañar Punto y aparte.   I will divide the class into two conversation groups, Grupo A and Grupo B.

E. Vocabulary and other quizzes (6%)

Throughout the semester, I will give quizzes on both vocabulary and grammatical structures and forms.

F. Workbook (10%)

You will be responsible for completing the workbook assignments in the Punto y aparte Online Manual, available at http://books.quia.com.  Please enroll in the Quia course for SPAN 202A, following the instructions I sent to you by email, or available at this web address: http://artemis.austincollege.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/instrquia202.htm  .  The Online Manual allows you to complete both the written and oral portions of the workbook on-line.

There are several advantages to the on-line workbook.  It allows students to receive immediate feedback, and it allows students to correct their errors.  Students  can submit an exercise multiple times, and it will score the best effort, providing the student with an opportunity to practice the grammar, which is the whole point of the workbook.  The on-line workbook allows one to submit one's work to the instructor from any computer.  It automatically records it in the instructor's gradebook, and it allows the student to see what assignments they've already turned in.  The due dates for each assignment are listed on-line.  For Chapters 1-6, there is an assignment that has students read an article in a Spanish-language newspaper.  There are links to these newspapers within the on-line manual itself.

IV. Academic integrity policy

It is understood that all students are subject to the rules of conduct set forth in the Austin College academic integrity policy. It is also understood that the instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus as needed during the semester.

1. Get a Spanish-language pen pal via the internet. Go to
Intercambio Cultural Español Inglés http://www.lingolex.com/ceengf.htm or http://www.LanguageTrade.com/ LanguageTrade™ Using this site, it is possible to speak to people in Hispanic countries via Yahoo Instant Messenger and your computer's microphone.
