Karl Hausner was born and raised on a farm in Sudeten-Schlesien, which was in family posession for over 300 years. At age 15, he was drafted into the pre-military service of the german army (January 1945). From May 8 to June 15, 1945 he remained in hiding with a Polish speaking family. Thereafter he was sent into a Czech labor camp, where he worked in coal-mining. At age 16, he was expelled to Bavaria (July 1946). After graduation of agricultural college in 1952, immigration to U.S.A. under the "Sputnik Quota."
From1953 to 1959 he worked in research and development at IHC in Chicago. From1959 to 1969 he was division manager and member of the executive of Siemens Medical of America, Inc. At the age of 40, he lost his eyesight due to an untreated condition he had suffered in the coal mining camp 1945/46.
In 1969 he started his own independent company ELMED INCORPORATED, for the design development and manufacturing of surgical instrumentation. In1985 he purchased a dairy farm in Wisconsin, which is presently about 3,000 acres in size. The farm has 850 dairy cows and a total herd of 3,000. In1998, Mr. Hausner purchased an animal nutrition, laboratory and supplement company in Wisconsin, serving life stock farmers.
He has been active in history,
including lecturing on events during and after World
War II. He sponsored a video
documentary by the Truman State University with Dr. James Paulding on the
history of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. In recent years Mr. Hausner
has been active in church restoration activities and other reconciliation
efforts in the region of his birth.
He has also lectured and
written articles on medical and surgical instrumentation
with emphasis on safety.
