Tooley--Selected World War I Links

This is a selected list.  Within these sites, one will find many  other Web resources for the study of World War I

AEF Vladivostock

The World War I Document Archive   One of the principal places on the Web to start any study of World War I.  There are documents aplenty, but there is also much more, including an entry to WWI-L, the discussion list for World War I.

Hellfire Corner  Tom Morgan has created one of the greatest Great War sites.

Trenches on the Web  This extensive collection of materials maintained by Mike Iavarone constitutes a really fine website, loaded with all kinds of information.  One can use it as  a virtual history of the war.

*An Unfortunate Region*  This is a very interesting site, started some time ago by Peter van den Heuvel and Marco Hoveling.  It is devoted to the physical area of the Western Front, both from the standpoint of the historical past and from that of the past's physical impact on the present.  There is much excellent material about the Western Front, especially some of its lesser known stretches and corners, that is not readily available, perhaps not available at all, elsewhere.  The two site owners are excellent web designers, and the site is laden with easily viewed photos, maps, etc.

Art of the First World War  A superb collection of paintings, drawings, and etchings by serious artists who witnessed the war, many of them as soldiers.  This site reflects an exhibition sponsored by some of the best historical museums in Europe.

*Photos of the Great War*  Just what it says.  This is now the photo section of the World War I Document Archive, noted above.

The Heritage of the Great War  Among other things, some very striking and pictures are to be found here.

*World War I and Poetry Links* -- Oxford University  Outstanding site on the literature and poetry of World War I, with links to many more sources.

*Belgian Fronts*  Hard-to-find information on an important phase of the war.

Canadian Great War Homepage  A really good national approach to World War I, with many great links.

*The British Army in the Great War*  This site has much useful information on special topics related to the British Army, army units, army life during World War I, and much more, including some very good photos.

The Versailles Treaty  This is a nice page put together by Steve Schoenherr at the University of San Diego.  Besides the full text of the treaty, there are photos, cartoons, and maps.

Scuttlebutt and Small Chow  (World War I Gallery)  Bradley Omanson's outstanding site covers all of US Marine Corps history, but his World War I section needs special mention here.

Queen Mary's Hospital Sidcup, UK: The Gillies Archives of plastic surgery  The WWI Document Archive has a fine section on medical issues.  For those who wish to know more about the special issue of plastic surgery and the repairing of facial injuries sustained in World War I, Dr. Andrew Bamji  has put together an outstanding site which includes extensive archival materials, photos, links, and more.  Highly recommended.

*http://Learningcurve.pro.gov.uk/greatwar/*  This is an interesting site maintained by the Public Record Office in Britain.   It makes some very good points and uses some primary documents very effectively.

*Relevance: The Qarterly Journal of the Great War Society*  An excellent collection of scholarly articles and reviews from the archives of this good journal.

*Links on World War I at About.com*  This is good list of further links on the songs and poetry of the war.  This is almost all English-language.  Well worth sorting through.
