As a result of this lesson, the student will be able to: Briefly summarize the main events of Americo Paredes’s life and explain his importance in Texas history.

The lesson content is about: Americo Paredes’s life

The student will process the content by: Identifying the main events of Paredes’s life.

The student will complete the following product as part of this lesson: A storyboard of the main events of Paredes’s life.

Assessment of learning

I will know how well the student has understood the content, process, or product by:
Ensuring that their storyboards are chronological and make sense.

Prerequisite skills that students should have for this lesson to be successful:
Understanding chronology, cause and effect.

Actual Lesson

Introduction: Brief explanation of who Paredes is and what a storyboard is.
Time needed:
5-10 minutes

Learner-centered Strategies/Activities: Students will create a storyboard with the main events of Paredes’s life, either from information that they have gathered on their own from the internet or from information provided in class. Students can share their storyboards with a small group of other students.
Time needed for each:
50 minutes (more time will be necessary if students are doing their own research)

Closure: Briefly summarize Paredes’s life and ask students what they thought were the main events of his life and why it is important to study his life.
Time needed:
10-15 minutes

Labeled a "Tall Texan" by the Bush library, this webpage provides a brief biography of Paredes, including information on the influence of With a Pistol in His Hand.

A biography of Paredes that focuses on his educational background and his academic accomplishments. Also contains a variety of related links both through the University of Texas and the Handbook of Texas Online.

A lengthy biography of Paredes, it eulogizes him and provides detailed information about the events of his life that inspired his research in folklore and corridos.

How will this lesson be made relevant to the lives of the students? Students will be able to explain why it is important to study Paredes’s life and will see how the events of his life influenced Texas and will understand cause and effect.

Materials required: butcher paper, markers/crayons

Classroom setup: areas for students to work on their storyboards individually
