As a result of this lesson, the student will be able to: explain the importance of Rancho de las Cabras to Mission San Francisco de la Espada

The lesson content is about: Rancho de las Cabras

The student will process the content by: producing a scrapbook containing collected images, captions, and objects pertaining to Rancho de las Cabras

The student will complete the following product as part of this lesson: an informative scrapbook of Rancho de las Cabras

Assessment of learning

I will know how well the student has understood the content, process, or product by: asking the students to present their scrapbook to the class. The presentation will include an explanation of the images, captions and objects included in the scrapbook, in particular the importance of the scrapbook contents to Rancho de las Cabras.

Prerequisite skills that students should have for this lesson to be successful: none

Actual Lesson

Introduction: The students will be introduced to Rancho de las Cabras by going over the history of the ranch, its owners, and its value to Mission San Francisco de la Espada. The students will additionally be introduced to the archaeological excavation of the ranch. Information on the excavation can be found at http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/st-plains/images/he4.html.

30-45min

Learner-centered Strategies/Activities: The students will work in groups to search for images and information on Rancho de las Cabras. Based upon their research, the students will determine which objects to include in the scrapbook, how to make the objects and and how to present them in the scrapbook.

How will this lesson be made relevant to the lives of the students? Students will be able to learn the development of Rancho de las Cabras through their individual interpretation of life on the ranch, an interpretation drawn from their own experiences.

Materials required: paper, construction paper, markers, glue, tape, internet, and any other materials the students find necessary for the making of their scrapbook

Classroom setup: desks could be organized into groups of 4
