As a result of this lesson, the student will be able to: provide a imaginary journal of daily life on Rancho de las Cabras from the perspective of Maria del Carmen Calvillo

The lesson content is about: Maria del Carmen Calvillo's management of Rancho de las Cabras and life at the ranch.

The student will process the content by: Reading about typical ranch activities that could be organized into a journal of life at the ranch.

The student will complete the following product as part of this lesson: a diary from the perspective of Maria del Carmen Calvillo

Assessment of learning

I will know how well the student has understood the content, process, or product by:
Reading the diary entries and evaluating the relevance of the entries to information provided about the ranch.

Prerequisite skills that students should have for this lesson to be successful: Reading, writing

Actual Lesson

Introduction: Explain the workings of the ranch and provide a brief biography on Maria del Carmen Calvillo. Time needed:15-20 min

Learner-centered Strategies/Activities: The students will be instructed to construct their own diary (out of paper of their choice and with binding of their choice) and produce five diary entries describing life on the ranch from the perspective of Maria del Carmen Calvillo. Time needed for each: 10 minutes per entry

Closure: Explain to the students why Maria del Carmen Calvillo is considered part of Texas history and what role she played in the management of the ranch. The students can be asked to share particular journal entries and explain why they find Maria del Carmen Calvillo to be an important historical figure. Time needed:15-20min

Provides a biography primarily focused on the accomplishments of Maria del Carmen Calvillo.

This article provides a biography and a description of Rancho de las Cabras, emphasis is placed on Calvillo's importance to Texas history.
