As a result of this lesson, the student will be able to:
know the importance of Maria del Carmen Calvillo as the owner of a ranch
The lesson content is about: The Ranch de las
Cabras and Misson Espada
The student will process the content by:
developing and organizing the reasons for needing more lands, and writing a
petition requesting a land grant for the expansion of Rancho de las Cabras
The student will complete the following product as
part of this lesson: a petition for a land grant
Assessment of learning
I will know how well the student has understood the content,
process, or product by:
reading the petition and evaluating how well information on
Maria del Carmen Calvillo and Rancho de las Cabras is incorporated into the
petition
Prerequisite skills that students should have for this
lesson to be successful: writing
Actual Lesson
Introduction: Present information on Mission Espada and
Rancho de las Cabras, including where the ranch is located, what the ranch
produces, some information on ranch life, and a brief biography on Maria del
Carmen Calvillo. Time needed: 15-20min
Learner-centered Strategies/Activities: The students
will be asked to write a brief petition from the perspective of Maria del
Carmen Calvillo explaining what the ranch does, the importance of the ranch
to the Mission San Francisco de la Espada, and why additional land is
necessary. Time needed for each:30min
Closure: Have the students discuss the information that
they provided in the petition and encourage a couple of the students to read
their petition out loud to the class. Time needed: 15 min
