As a result of this lesson, the student will be able to: discuss the exact history behind the passing of HB 588 (Texas Top Ten Percent Plan)

The lesson content is about: HB 588 (Texas Top Ten Percent Plan)

The student will process the content by: re-enacting the procedures that led to the acceptance of HB 588

The student will complete the following product as part of this lesson:  a re-enactment of the Texas House of Representatives sessions dealing with HB 588

Assessment of learning

I will know how well the student has understood the content, process, or product by: observing the re-enactment and evaluating the comments made

Prerequisite skills that students should have for this lesson to be successful: none

Actual Lesson

Introduction: Explain to the students the history of HB 588, who worked on the bill, what the bill says, what was presented to the House of Representatives, speeches made in favor or against the bill, and how the bill was received by the majority of the house members.
Time needed:
25-30 min

Learner-centered Strategies/Activities: After providing background information for the students, designate roles to the students. Have the students research their role’s specific involvement in the passing of the bill and house proceedings for a bill. The students should then re-enact certain parts of the bill proceedings accordingly.

Time needed for each: 20 minutes for research, 30 minutes for the re-enactment

Closure: Discuss with the class the bill proceedings and have the students explain points that they learned through the re-enactment process.

Classroom setup: attempt to set up the desks in format similar to that of the Texas House of Representatives
