As a result of this lesson, the student will be able to: evaluate education measures and learn about Irma Rangel and HB 588

The lesson content is about: HB 588 and Irma Rangel

The student will process the content by: Studying the bill-writing process and Irma Rangel’s strategies, then drafting a bill of their own.

The student will complete the following product as part of this lesson: a bill

I will know how well the student has understood the content, process, or product by: evaluating the content and presentation of the bill

Prerequisite skills that students should have for this lesson to be successful: none

Actual Lesson

Introduction: Introduce the students to Irma Rangel by telling them who she is and what she did, specifically explain what HB 588 (Texas Top Ten Percent Bill) is. Have the students read HB 588.
Time needed:
20 minutes

Learner-centered Strategies/Activities: Using HB 588 as a model, have the students prepare their own bill with their own suggestion for increasing minority enrollment and helping underprivileged students in Texas. Their suggestion should have facts for basis.
Time needed for each:
20 min

Closure: Have the students share their bill suggestions with the class, additionally have class members discuss if their bill suggestions are plausible. Time needed: 15 minutes.
