As a result of this lesson, the student will be able to: understand how a bill becomes a law

The lesson content is about: bills and laws, in particular HB 588 and HB 1640

The student will process the content by: Collecting information for and making a game that traces the steps by which a bill becomes a law

The student will complete the following product as part of this lesson: a game

Assessment of learning

I will know how well the student has understood the content, process, or product by:

evaluating how the students incorporate the steps of how a bill becomes a law into the game

Prerequisite skills that students should have for this lesson to be successful: none

Actual Lesson

Introduction: Review with the students how a bill becomes a law. For examples, use Irma Rangel’s HB 588 and HB 1640. Explain to the students that the games should be educational and easy to play. Time needed: 20-30 min

Learner-centered Strategies/Activities: The students should be divided into groups of four, together the students should work on determining an appropriate game. The games could be board games or any other form the students desire. Once the game is completed groups, can trade games and play. Time needed for each: 1 hour in class and some outside time to make the game, 30 minutes to play the games

Closure: Have the students discuss which games were the most effective and why.

Time needed: 15 min
