A listing of all the people, events and communities that were influenced by
Martin de Leon.

This is the first of several comprehensive sites maintained by the Texas A&M
University, complied by the Sons of Dewitt Colony, Texas. Their main source
of information is the text written by A.B. Hammet in 1973, entitled The
Empresario. This particular site has valuable information concerning
Martin’s children and family, as well as their contributions to the colony.

Another biography maintained by The Handbook of Texas Online, this provides
some basic but good information about Patricia de la Garza de Leon, Martin’s
wife.

This site includes good pictures and quick facts about the community of
Victoria presently, as well as several historical facts. There are contact
numbers that could prove useful for contacting someone within the community
if an educator would like further information from the town.

A continuation of the site compiled by the Sons of Dewitt Colony, Texas.
Also contains a general biography, but also contains a translation of de
Leon’s petition for the colony land, a roster and discussion of the original
settlers, his ledger, ten years worth of letters written by members of the
colony, discussion of colony proceeding de Leon’s death and the Mexica-
American War.

The main site for the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio is a
resource rich site. They offer several forms of programming and lesson
opportunities for those educators who cannot bring their students to the
Institute, in addition to activities and (samples included above) an
extensive online photo archive. A non-circulating library is available to
the public at the Institute. Included (the first link) is more information
and very clear photos and sketches of de Leon family and artifacts, compiled
and written by Caroline Castillo Crimm.

While the site is describing the flag of Victoria County, it is most
important to pay attention to the embellished "E" in the center. It is same
design was created and used by Martin de Leon for his cattle branding.

Not specific to Martin de Leon, but his creation of Victoria and his family
certainly is part of the focus of the article, the changes that occurred
along the Texas boarder with the division between Mexican and Anglo culture.
