Invasion Yanqui:
The Mexican War
Humanities Interactive Exercise
Spanish Borderlands, History 329
Austin College

Students will visit the exhibit "Invasion Yanqui: The Mexican War" at the online site of the Texas Humanities Resource Center. A direct link to that exhibit appears below on this page.

After viewing the entire exhibit, students should write a two page, double spaced paper of critical commentary dealing with this exhibit within the context of this course. This paper should both comment on the images in the exhibit and relate them to points taken from the readings and class lectures. The finished paper is due at class time on Monday, November 27th.

In that regard, it would be helpful to consider some of the following questions, although these suggestions are not intended as a checklist of questions to be answered. Do not limit your commentary only to the questions below. Instead, they serve only as a rough guide for the sorts of comments you might make in your paper.

1.     What role did Manifest Destiny play in the events that led the war? Comment on and analyze in depth an image from the exhibit that highlights this point.

2.    How did internal political and military considerations in Mexico motivate the war and determine its course? Comment on and analyze in depth an image from the exhibit that highlights this point.

3.    How did the American armies win the war and what impact did the war have on Mexico and her citizens? Comment on and analyze in depth an image from the exhibit that highlights this point.

4.     How does this online exhibit relate to the views and assessments of the war as presented in class?
