Music 257D
Fall Semester, 2009 T/Th, 9:30-10:50 a.m. Craig Hall 113 R. Duhaime As a second course in woodwind pedagogy, following a study of the single reed woodwind instruments, the course will provide both practical and theoretical information relating to the performance and teaching of the double reed instruments. Progress throughout the course will be expected in both individual playing proficiency as well as pedagogical knowledge, as noted below. Texts: Two current band method books will be utilized, both supplied in class: Essential Elements 2000, pub. Hal
Leonard, 1999 Various handouts, texts, and supplemental methods will be supplied in class. Reeds: Since teaching and performance success on the double reed instruments is more dependant on reed quality than on other woodwind instruments, students must acquire the knowledge and physical skills necessary at least to adjust commercial reeds (if not fabricate original reeds). A portion of the course will therefore be devoted to reed theory and adjustment, an understanding of which students must demonstrate by successfully analyzing and fixing reed problems. Class Attendance: Since a significant portion of the final grade for the course will be based on daily performance and participation, attendance at all class sessions is expected, with any missed sessions requiring immediate arrangements to be made before the next class session. Grading: A+/A/A- final average from
90%-100% The final averages will be computed
from the following: Honor System: The current Honor System employed by Austin College, as given in posted statements, is in full effect for the course. As an instrumental instructor whose specialty may not be double reed instruments (or even woodwinds), you may need to provide sources for students to access for reeds, equipment and other pedagogical material. Following is a list of American suppliers, which you will be asked to research and evaluate during the course of the semester. At the time of your presentation, you will provide a written summary of your findings for each member of the class, to be included in the final version of source material notebooks. Your evaluation should give: a. complete contact information (mailing address, phone number, website) b. an inventory of materials and/or services provided (e.g., instruments, reeds and tools, repair capabilities, music, recordings) c. general comparison of prices for items listed above, as compared with other supplies for similar items d. your impression of the business and whether your would recommend it (and why or why not) Peter Angelo Greenwich, CT 06830 Christlieb Products Sherman Oaks, CA 91403 John Hayden New London, CT 06320 Jones Double Reed Products Cheney, WA 99004 Forrest’s Music Berkeley, CA 94704 McFarland Double Reed Shop Atlanta, GA 30324 The Oboe Shop San Francisco, CA 94115 T.G.
