James Kouzes and Barry Posner (in The Leadership Challenge) distill the qualities and characteristics of leadership into ten commitments (embodied in five practices):

                                PRACTICES                  COMMITMENTS

Challenging The Process

Leaders challenge the status quo

Search out challenging opportunities to change, grow, innovate, and improve.
Experiment, take risks, and learn from the accompanying mistakes.
Inspiring A Shared Vision

Leaders can see what they want, and inspire others to adopt this vision

Envision an uplifting and ennobling future.
Enlist others in a common vision by appealing to their values, interests, hopes, and dreams.
Enabling Others To Act

Leaders give away power, helping others to gain a stake in what happens

Foster collaboration by promoting cooperative goals and building trust.
Strengthen people by giving power away, providing choice, developing competence, assigning critical tasks, and offering a visible support.
Modeling The Way

Leaders must "walk the talk"

Set the example by behaving in ways that are consistent with shared values.
Achieve small wins that promote consistent progress and build commitment.
Encouraging The Heart

Leaders celebrate and acknowledge accomplishment

Recognize individual contributions to the success of every project.
Celebrate team accomplishments regularly

ASSIGNMENT: Each member of her group is to take ONE of these practices, and find examples in the film of both of the commitments associated with that practice. Post your answers to your group WebBoard.
