Psi Chi

Psi Chi is "A national honorary society for outstanding students in psychology. To be eligible for membership a student must rank in the top one-third of his or her class in general scholarship and must have demonstrated superior scholarship in psychology. A student must have taken experimental psychology [i.e., research methods in psychology]." (from the Austin College Bulletin)

Membership in Psi Chi is by invitation by the psychology faculty and by approval of the national organization.

The Austin College chapter was chartered on November 5th, 1976.

Psychology Club

The purpose of the Austin College Psychology Club is to provide an outlet for any person interested in psychology. It is a place to meet and discuss current issues of psychology and to learn about the field. It provides an opportunity for people to learn about psychology outside of the classroom through speakers and conferences. Membership is open to any interested student in the Austin College community.

Here at Austin College Psi Chi and Psychology Club work together to promote the field of psychology among the student body. Psychology Club is particularly suited for first and second year students who are interested in learning more about and participating in the field of psychology.

* New Professor in Psychology: The Psychology Department is pleased to announce the addition of Renee Countryman to AC starting the fall of 2008. Renee is a physiological psychologist who most recently taught at Illinois Wesleyan University. This fall she will be teaching General Psychology, Intro to Physiological Psychology and Research Methods. Her research interests are in memory and its applications to Alzheimer's disease.

* Psychology Research “Brown Bag” lunches: For the last several years we have tried to have times when research students can get together with faculty and with one another to talk about the research process.  Watch for emails and flyers announcing these events.

* Events on Campus:

Monday, April 27, 2009 Internship Forum sponsored by the Psychology Club at 4:30pm in WCC 255.  We will have people representing several different agencies in the area, including an AC graduate who is now working for the Children's Advocacy Center.  Learn about various opportunities for internships/volunteering.

Our sixth annual Undergraduate Conference will focus broadly on Darwin’s impact on academic disciplines. Student papers or posters will cover a diverse range of evolution-related topics spanning the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
Keynote speaker: Dr. David M. Buss, Professor, Head of Individual Differences and Evolutionary Psychology Area (IDEP) at the University of Texas at Austin. Wednesday, October 22, 2008, NASA Astronaut, Stephanie Wilson, will give a presentation called "The Making of an Astronaut" in Hoxie Thompson (second floor of Sherman Hall) at 4:30pm. This event will be sponsored by the Department of Psychology. Quoted from her NASA bio: "Selected by NASA in April 1996, Wilson reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1996. Having completed two years of training and evaluation, she is qualified for flight assignment as a mission specialist. She was initially assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Space Station Operations Branch to work with Space Station payload displays and procedures. She then served in the Astronaut Office CAPCOM Branch, working in Mission Control as a prime communicator with on-orbit crews. Following her work in Mission Control, Wilson was assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Shuttle Operations Branch involving the Space Shuttle Main Engines, External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters. A veteran of two space flights, STS-121 in 2006, and STS-120 in 2007, Wilson has logged over 28 days in space." Click here to read her full bio. Click here to see her video clip on the local news.

Friday, September 19, 2008, Kevin Krug of LSU-Shreveport will come and talk about getting into graduate school in psychology. The time and place will probably be 3pm in Hopkins. This event will be sponsored by the Psychology Club.

Tuesday, September 9, 2008, the Psychology Department will host an Open House from 11-12:30 at the WCC in the Moseley Room. This is a chance to meet the psychology faculty, hear about what courses they teach and get an overview of the research they will be conducting. This is a carry-your-tray event. Feel free to drop in at any time.

Thursday, September 4, 2008, Psi Chi and the Psychology Club will host a table at the Opportunities Fair on the AC Mall. Stop by for more information about the Department, Psi Chi and/or Psychology Club.

* Events in the Region:
Every February UT-Arlington hosts a Psychology Convention. Registration is FREE. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to submit abstracts for posters or 15-minute talks. The submission deadline is usually the first week of February and the conference is usually the last week of February.
