Robert W. Cape, Jr., Professor of Classics

Bob Cape received a B.A. in Latin and M.A. in History from the University of Arizona, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics from UCLA. He teaches Latin, Greek, and ancient history, with special interests in Latin prose, rhetoric, women in antiquity, and Roman social and intellectual history. He has also taught about the ancient world in science fiction and is interested in classical receptions. He conducts classes in Rome in the January term. Dr. Cape has published many reviews and articles on Roman historiography, rhetoric, Greek and Roman women, ancient slavery, and Cicero . He is currently working on a book on science fiction and classics and on several projects related to Cicero and Roman political language. He has been recognized for outstanding teaching and research by Austin College and has received awards for teaching from the American Philological Association and for research from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is also the Chief Reader for the new Advanced Placement Latin Examination.
