This
is
a course dealing with the tempestuous history of Europe from
the 1850's to World War II. In this period we see a
Europe at high tide, a Europe able to dominate most of the
globe economically, politically, and militarily. Yet
within the trends and events of the period we can also see the
seeds of the apparent decline of this political force
vis-a-vis the rest of the world and at least temporary
collapse at home. This period was one of high drama and
low villainy, the patterns and lessons of which no educated
person should be ignorant. You are thus to be
congratulated on having enlisted to study this fascinating
subject.
