"Hoosiers" tells the story of
Norman Dale, a disgraced ex-college basketball coach whose obsession with winning led to
his expulsion from the college ranks for hitting a player. The movie chronicles his
return to coaching, and his attempt to re-invent both himself and the high school
team he inherits.
Faced with a team that won't listen, in a town that doesn't trust
him, Coach Dale's initial prospects look bleak. But over the course of the film, we
see all three (the team, the town, and the coach) evolve simultaneously. We will use
the film to examine a very influential theory of leadership advocated by James Kouzes and
Barry Posner in their book, The Leadership Challenge.
