Wormholes

Terms to know:

- Blackholes

-White holes

Kip Thorne

- Stephen Hawkings

- General Relativity

- Singularity

Time Travel Today:

-Back into the future

“… Gravitational-wave detectors will soon bring us observational maps of black holes colliding <…> computer simulations will attempt to replicate the symphonies and tell us what they mean, and black holes thereby will become the objects of detailed scrutiny. What will that scrutiny teach us? There will be surprises.”

(( Kip S. Thorne, Black holes and Time Warps: Einstein’s Outrageous Leg)

  Wormhole Definition:

Wormholes are bridges formed between black holes ( and white holes) connecting widely separated regions of space-time

            What to know about wormholes:

- Theory made popular by Kip Thorne in 1970's

-  Wormholes would make it possible to travel faster than light, travel backwards and forwards in time, travel to different places in the universe or even to other universes

- To make the transportation possible the wormhole has to be open at all time. Two theories were established to make this possible:

                               - Thorne: Casimir effect

                               - Visser: theory evolving cosmic strings (= linear cracks in the universe)

- Hawkings theory:  impossible to timetravel or travel through wormholes because they are unstable

- Popularity of wormholes in the entertainment business ex. Back to the Future
